THE ambitious redevelopment of Winsford town centre has moved a step closer.

Updated plans for the first phase of the proposed scheme have been revealed ahead of the submission of a full planning application.

It follows a public consultation exercise in the summer when hundreds of local people and businesses shared their views on what the new town centre should look like and offer.

As a result of that the revised plans include more restaurants and places to socialise, better quality parking and gardens and more tree planting.

The vision also includes easier links with the rest of the town through improved walking and cycling routes and a new public square where outdoor civic and entertainment events can be held.

The town's war memorial would be a central feature in this new public square, which will offer a better environment for civic events.

Richard Beacham, Cheshire West and Cheshire cabinet member for inclusive growth, economy and regeneration, said: "Thanks to the many people and businesses who took part in the consultation in June and July. We have received lots of different views and ideas.

"The project team has read through all of the feedback on our initial plans and we are keen for the final full planning application for phase one this autumn to accurately reflect the views people have been giving us. It is important that the town centre meets the needs of people who use the town.

"As a result, our plans have altered to reflect these views and we can reveal plans for phase one today ahead of the planning application being submitted soon.

"We are still seeking the views of residents ahead of the planning application being submitted this autumn and we encourage you to take part.

"This is phase one of the project to revitalise Winsford town centre and we will continue to speak with residents and businesses through the next phases so that together we can create a new town centre that everyone can enjoy."

Ahead of the planning application being submitted, the council has been seeking views on the finer details of phase one of the scheme.
