Golfers were back on the fairways to help Cheshire employer The County Group raise a bumper sum for charity.

The insurance broking group, based on Crewe Business Park, drew 13 teams of players to Wychwood Park Golf Club to play in a tournament raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

County Group CEO Alastair Christopherson said: "There's always tremendous enthusiasm for this event and after the successful relaunch last year, players were out in full force again to support the charity.

"There was friendly rivalry throughout the day as the tournament progressed and some very skilful play in the individual competitions. Win or lose, the teams had a very enjoyable day and we were delighted with their generosity."

Three teams came from the County Group headquarters on Crewe Business Park, two from Rawlins Insurance in Newcastle-under-Lyme and others from Kindertons Accident Management, Crewe, Guardian Insurance, Wigan, software specialists, Open GI, Worcester and Premium Credit Ltd finance company and Milestone Insurance, Leeds.

Global Risk Partners, the County Group's parent company, and Zurich Insurance were also represented on a memorable day raising more than £2,000 for the charity.

Triumphant winners were Rawlins Team 2 who split a £200 prize pot. Runners-up were Open GI and in third place, Guardian Insurance.

Jim Miekle, from the Premium Credit Ltd team, took the individual prize for longest drive on the 18th hole and nearest to pin on the 11th.

Prizes also went to winners in the individual competition - Steve Smith of Guardian Insurance in first place, runner up Stuart Finch, Guardian Insurance and Jon Howells, Premium Credit Ltd, third.

The day began with bacon rolls and was rounded off with a presentation and slap up dinner of pie, chips and peas.

County employee Cheryl Shrigley and Linda Catterall from GRP kept the golfers fuelled throughout the day with drinks and snacks from their golf buggy.

The charity was chosen as John Lawson, chairman of the RNLI Congleton branch, who was the original owner of Heath & Blackshaw Insurance in Congleton which was taken over by the County Group in 2003.

Long-standing fundraising efforts have kept going including six annual golf events to date.
